2) THE AMECIAN CONTINENT:

America is a continent of the world comprising 35 countries in three geographical regions.

Constituted by North America, Central America and South America (considered as sub-continents because of their geographical independence), the American continent extends over more than 16 000 km from north to south, from North Greenland (near the Arctic Circle) to Cape Horn (near the Antarctic Circle). It is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by the Arctic Ocean and on the south by the Antarctic Ocean; the southern tip of the continent marks the separation between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The American continent covers an area of about 40 million km^2 and had (in 2004) a population of about 863 million.

4) THE TOTAL AREA:

The American continent covers an area of about 40 million km^2 and had (in 2004) a population of about 863 million.

5) NORTH  AMERICA:

North America is the northern part of America, the second largest of the five continents by size, including Canada (second largest country in the world by area after Russia), the United States (fourth) and Mexico (thirteenth).

North America is bounded to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the north by the Arctic Ocean. With more than 395 million inhabitants, North America is the fourth most populous continent in the world; the United States (271 million) is in fourth place and Mexico (94 million) in the eleventh. Canada and the United States (first world power) have a developed and successful economy. Mexico, although technically inferior to its neighbors, holds some of the world's largest oil and natural gas deposits.

6) CENTRAL AMERICA:

Central America is a region consisting of a long, narrow isthmus forming a bridge between North America and South America. Central America covers an area of approximately 520 000 km^2 and includes, from north to south, in addition to the Yucatán peninsula, in Mexico, seven states including Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
The geological boundary of Central America lies at the narrow isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico. This narrow section separates the northwestern volcanic rocks from the folded and crevassed structures of Central America. To the south, the Atrato Valley in Colombia, a country in South America, marks the limit with South America.

7) SOUTH AMERICA:

South America is a geographic region of America, encompassing 12 countries.

South America is the fourth largest land mass in the world (after Asia, Africa and North America), covering about 17,800,000 km^2, or nearly 12% of the world's land mass. 100 of the world's land masses. South America is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Southern Ocean to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west; it is connected to North to Central America by the isthmus of Panama.

This region of the world, which stretches about 7,400 km from the Caribbean Sea in the north to Cape Horn in the south, is about 4,800 km wide between Cape São Roque (Brazil), the Atlantic Ocean, and Punta Pariñas (Peru) on the Pacific coast.

The population of South America was estimated in 1990 at 300 million, less than 6%. 100 of the world's population. This group is made up of ten Latin countries. The coast of South America is relatively regular, with the exception of the extreme south and south-east, divided into numerous fjords.

8) GEOGRAPHIC CONTEXT:

North America looks like a triangle whose base would be its northern part. Its landmass occupies much of the middle latitudes, with a considerable portion north of the Arctic Circle and a smaller portion south of the Tropic of Cancer. The mainland stretches from east to west for about 176 ° longitude, longitude 12 ° west (Nordost Rundingen, north-east Greenland) at longitude 172 ° east (west end of Attu Island) , Alaska). From North to South, North America extends about 69 °, latitude 83 °; north (Morris Jesup Cape, east of Greenland) at approximately latitude 14 ° N (southern Mexico). The total area of North America is approximately 23.5 million km^2.
