2) THE OLD CONTINENT:
Europe is a continent of 46 countries in five geographical regions ( 28 of which belong to the Schengen Zone ).
Made up of Northern Europe, Western Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Southern Europe, the European continent is bounded to the east by Asia, south by the Mediterranean Sea, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea and to the north by the Arctic Ocean. Islands or archipelagos of the Atlantic are attached to Europe: Iceland, Azores (Portugal), Canaries (Spain) or Svalbard (Norway)
Europe, along with Asia, is part of the continental system of Eurasia. By convention, geographers consider that the border between Asia and Europe corresponds to the Ural Mountains and the Ural River to the Caspian Sea , including a small part of Turkey and sometimes the Caucasus. Despite its vast territory, largely located in Asia, Russia is generally considered to be a European country.
Very early, the geographical sense and the origin of the term "Europe" intrigued the historians. Greek mythology tells us that Europe is one of the oceanoids, or the daughter of a legendary king of Phenicia, loved by Zeus who abducted her. Legend has it that his brothers went looking for him and founded several cities. Herodotus, in his Histories, writes in this connection that Europe, born in Asia, probably never visited the continent, that the Greeks of the fifth century BC. BC already call Europe.

4) AREA:
The European continent covers an area of about 23 million km^2 and had (in 2004) a population of about 730 million.
5) LOCATION AND PENINSULAS:
Its maritime facades, due to the deep penetration of the sea inland, have a very important development: Europe has 32,000 km of coast including 13,500 km of Atlantic coast and 12,700 km of Mediterranean shores.
The Northern Cape, located in Norway, is the northernmost point of the European continent, the southernmost point being at Punta de Tarifa, in the south of Spain, near Gibraltar. Excluding Mount Elbrous (5,642 m) in the Caucasus Mountains, on the edge of Asia, the highest peak of the continent is Mont Blanc (4,810 m), in the Alps, in France. The lowest area in Europe is the low lying Caspian Sea, 28 meters below sea level.
The land mass is divided by several large peninsulas (Scandinavia, Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Balkan Peninsula) and smaller ones, such as Jutland, Jylland, and Brittany. Europe comprises two important island groups: one in the Atlantic, Iceland and the British Isles, the other in the Mediterranean, with Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Crete.
6) CLIMATE:
Europe is crossed by the 45th Parallel, equidistant from the Pole and Ecuador; by its extension in latitude, it is almost entirely in a temperate zone, with the exception of the northernmost part of Scandinavia, which belongs to the subpolar climate.
Three elements explain the characteristics of the climates: first, the maritime influence due to the intertwining of the lands and the seas, then, the presence, off its coasts, of a hot current - the drift North-Atlantic (from the Gulf Stream) - which makes its influence felt beyond the Arctic Circle, finally, the arrangement of high reliefs in an arc, on the periphery of the territory, allowing the penetration of air masses oceanic to the heart of Europe.
The relatively warm seas bordering Western Europe (the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean) give most of the western and central parts of the continent a moderate climate, with cool winters and mild summers.
the summer months are usually warm and dry, with precipitation occurring mostly in winter or in the intermediate, fall and spring seasons.
